It has been really impressive watching our son go from not having any idea about what to write about to having multiple polished essays that sound like him.  She definitely does not write the essays--this has all been her helping him to brainstorm and introspect, thinking about how best to get his point across while answering the prompt, and giving more general advice about how transitions and conclusions and other parts of these kinds of personal essays actually work. She also doesn't force a specific type of essay--our son really did not want to write one of the essays that online places recommend with a cheesy "hook," and he has been able to create coherent essays that don't.  A half-hour a week for a few weeks has made a huge difference both in the existence and quality of his essays and also the amount of angst in our household from a more technically-minded teenager who didn't know what to do and had trouble introspecting with us or by himself. - Joanna L.
